B.E. PETROLEUM ENGINEERING (Introduced First Time in TamilNadu)
Petroleum-Banner

The department of Petroleum Engineering was introduced in the year 2005 with an intake of 60 and increased to 90 in the year 2014. The field overlaps with many of the engineering disciplines, such as: geosciences, mechanical, chemical, and civil engineering. It is basically concerned with the activities related to the exploration, drilling, and production of hydrocarbons from onshore and offshore areas.

The Petroleum engineers are imparted  knowledge on areas like geophysics, petroleum geology, formation evaluation (well logging), drilling, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, artificial lift systems, completions, and oil and gas facilities engineering enhanced oil recovery, onshore / offshore engineering

Petroleum engineers locate, recover and maintain the world’s oil and gas supplies. They are the innovators who use cutting-edge technology to create new methods of discovering and drilling for oil.

The breadth and depth of petroleum engineering is unique and is multi disciplinary. The same is designed to prepare each graduate for a successful career with both technical competence and managerial ability. To maintain leadership in current and future technology, the program has included various guest lectures by practicing engineers and earth scientists in the field, in addition to field visits and field training.

The petroleum and allied industries have lauded the launching of this programme and the popularity of the programme is reflected in the quite a large number of applicants for admissions for the same. A few of our students have been provided scholarship from oil MNC’s for their four years study in our institution and they will be taken by the companies on successful completion of their programme.

Department is affiliated with international associations like Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Association of Petroleum Geologists (APG). Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) with international members recognized the student chapter of SPE in our department during the academic year 2008-2009. SPE chapter has round the year events including participation of faculty and students in international conferences like ADIPEC, SPE Indian conference, IPTC and in line with in – chapter and section events like lecturer programs, technical field trips, quiz programs, technical workshop, ambassador lecture programme, environmental protection initiatives, personal development and soft skill.

The students and faculty have made appreciable steps in raising the standards of academic achievements by publishing papers, participating and winning in technical competitions. The department has also facilitated the students with esteemed foreign and Indian speakers on core petroleum engineering subjects.

Students are deputed for industrial training/project work to the reputed industries like: Reliance, Essar Oil, ONGC, Oil India, HPCL, BPCL, Weatherford etc. Regular field visits are organized to oilfields to broaden their understanding.
