Modern automotive engineering, along with aerospace engineering and marine engineering, is a branch of vehicle engineering, incorporating elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software & safety engineering as applied to the design, manufacture & operation of motorcycles, automobiles, buses & trucks and their respective engineering sub-systems. Chennai is the fourth largest metropolitan city of INDIA. Since, Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering is located in Sriperumbudur, the automobile hub, undergraduate programme, “Automobile Engineering” has been introduced from the academic year 2012-’13 with the hope of molding the students in & around Chennai as a proficient automobile engineers. It is a profession which requires a lot of hard work, dedication, determination & commitment which college aspires to impart.

Automobile or Automotive Engineering has gained recognition and importance ever since motor vehicles capable for transporting passengers has been in vogue. Now, due to the rapid growth of auto component manufacturers & automobile industries, there is a great demand for Automobile Engineers.

Automobile Engineering alias Automotive Engineering or Vehicle Engineering is one of the most challenging careers in the field of engineering with a wide scope. This branch deals with the designing, developing, manufacturing, testing, repairing & servicing automobiles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters etc... For the perfect blend of manufacturing & designing automobiles, Automobile Engineering uses the features of different elements of Engineering such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, software &safety engineering.

The major task of an Automobile Engineer is the designing, developing, manufacturing and testing of vehicles from the concept stage to the production stage. This broad field of engineering has many sub sections and the areas of specialization include engine systems, electronics and control systems, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, supply chain management etc. It involves understanding the mechanism of vehicle chassis, internal combustion Engine, electrical systems, Motor transport affairs, workshop technology, research and design.

Automobile Engineers are mainly classified into three streams like Product or Design Engineers, Development Engineers & Manufacturing Engineers. Product Engineers or Design Engineers are those who deal with the designing, testing of the components & systems of automobiles. They design & test each part of the visualized automobile, seeing that it meets all requirements, performs as required, that the material meets desired durability & so on. Manufacturing Engineers deal with activities like how to create & assemble the whole parts of automobiles. They have to design & layout the equipment, machine rates & line rates, specification of automation equipment& manufacturing safety procedures.
